A man has written an open letter of apology to a gay couple he publicly shamed more than 20 years ago.
The man from Ohama, who said he was ’17 and bigoted’ at the time, posted the letter on Craigslist.
He recalled how he saw the couple ‘smooching’ on a curb near the entrance to an amusement park when he said loudly: “Ewww gross.”
‘As we walked away I felt a prick of shame,’ he said.
‘Outwardly I had acted as if it was you who should be ashamed, but for over 20 years it has been me who carries this shame. I’m writing this today to apologize for my behavior.’
The man said he had ‘walked away from the religion that taught me to hate’ while at university and now considers himself an LGBTI ally.
‘Wherever you are I hope you’re each still sitting close with a loved one and living a wonderful life,’ he wrote.
